Mercury Amalgam Tooth Fillings: FDA Changes Stance
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) seems to have changed their stance on dental amalgam fillings. In a legal settlement signed last week, the FDA has changed the information on its Web site about amalgam fillings to say that they “may have neurotoxic effects on the nervous systems of developing children and fetus” and that pregnant women “should not avoid seeking dental care, but should discuss options with their health practitioner.” Till now they were not so harsh on the neurotoxic effects of mercury fillings.

Dr. Fallah and Fresh Start offer hope for San Marco twins
According to Dr. Fallah, they are two of the worst cases he’s ever seen. “I’ve seen this condition before,” he told the North County Times, “just not [this bad] in one person.”
The patients he is referring to are 16-year old twins Stephanie and Ramses Villa from San Marco, California.
TMJ, Headaches, Facial Pains
The Temporomandibular Joints – where the lower jaw attaches to the skull – are a complex system of bone, muscle, ligaments and tissue. When they are healthy, they allow us to perform many important, every-day functions, including chewing, breathing, talking – even kissing.
When they are not functioning properly, however, the results are the intense joint pain and muscle spasms associated with TMJ.
Symptoms and Causes of TMJ
Many Americans experience the symptoms of TMJ. These can include:
- Sore jaw
- Headaches
- Facial discomfort
- Shoulder and neck pain
- Ringing in the ears
- Clicking or popping in the jaw
These symptoms can be the result from a number of factors, including:
- Tearing, dislocation or other trauma to the joint
- Arthritis
- Tumors
Whatever the cause of your TMJ symptoms, Dr. Fallah understands the significant impact it can have on your life and is committed to designing the course of treatment that will work best for you.
Treating TMJ
Dr. Fallah’s approach to treating TMJ involves careful planning and precise diagnostic procedures to make sure that your treatment is as effective as possible. Dr. Fallah will work with you every step of the way to keep you educated and informed, allowing you to take an active role in your treatment.
First, Dr. Fallah measures and maps your jaw using sophisticated computer diagnostic equipment. Based on this diagnostic, he constructs an orthotic to temporarily adjust your bite to a healthier, physiologic position.
Once it has been determined that the bite correction that Dr. Fallah has designed will achieve your desired results, a number of techniques can be used to permanently correct your bite and alleviate your symptoms. These include:
- Orthotic devices and porcelain crowns to adjust your bite, or
- Neuromuscular Orthodontics, or
- Dentures and/or partials to replace missing teeth, or
- Tooth reshaping to reduce interference with jaw displacement
Dr. Fallah is committed to providing a sophisticated, thoughtful approach to the treatment of TMJ. We treat the causes – not just the symptoms – so you can count on receiving the treatment strategy that has the best chance of working for your specific condition.
